Useful Work Space

Dream Room Winner

Location: Waverly, IA

Designer Credits: Julie Meyers

Project Overview:

Functional yet fun, bright and airy, this loft home office is the perfect space for our client to get some work done, and doubles as sleeping quarters for his guests when needed. With a nod to his background as a naval officer, this room is 100% ship shape! We were fortunate to be placed recently at the 37th Annual Dream Room competition in the Home Office category.

Useful Work Space

A few challenges

Having just purchased this home, Julie’s client was a bit perplexed about how best to use this loft space. He requested that we provide functionality for his home office here, but also wanted it to be usable as a ‘hang out space’ and for sleeping when all of his kids come to visit. While the loft space itself is fairly large, a big portion of it is very long and narrow, so not really suited to anything aside from being a walkway. We essentially had only about a 10′ x 12′ area in which to fit everything we needed. We also needed to work around windows and other openings on every available wall.

We did it!

New carpet and paint were the first steps in this room’s makeover, followed by a comfortable sofa sleeper with memory foam mattress and a coordinating desk, lateral file cabinets and side table. Choosing the wood pieces in a white finish brightened up and helped to keep the space from feeling too crowded. A pair of storage ottomans in a brightly colored graphic upholstery fabric add to the comfort and functionality of the space, and can serve as additional seating when needed. A room darkening Vignette shade from Hunter Douglas at the window allows the space to be amenable to guests sleeping in, and a tailored cornice, custom upholstered to coordinate with the sofa and ottomans, tops it off. This was also the perfect space for display of our client’s many military mementos and commendations, and a few carefully curated accessories lend important finishing touches.
